چکیده

A simple method is proposed for testing equivalence in a restricted domain of two given term rewriting systems. By using the Church-Rosser property and the teachability of term rewriting systems, the method allows us to prove equivalence of these systems without the explicit use of induction; this proof usually requires some kind of induction. The method proposed is a general extension of inductionless induction methods developed by Musser, Goguen, Huet and HuUot, and allows us to extend inductionless induetior~ concepts to not only term rewriting systems with the termination property, but also various reduction systems: term rewriting systems without the termination property, string rewriting systems, graph rewriting systems, combinatory reduction systems, and resolution systems. This method is applied to test equivalence of term rewriting systems, to prove the inductive theorems, and to derive a new term rewriting system from a given system by using equivalence transformation rules.

Lemma Generation Method in Rewriting Induction for Constrained Term Rewriting Systems

Recently, rewriting induction, which is one of the induction principles for proving inductive theorems in equational theory, has been extended to deal with constrained term rewriting systems. Rewriting induction has been applied to developing a method for proving the equivalence of imperative programs. To prove inductive theorems, there are many cases where appropriate lemmas need to be added. ...

A Verifying Procedural Programs via Constrained Rewriting Induction

This paper aims to develop a verification method for procedural programs via a transformation into Logically Constrained Term Rewriting Systems (LCTRSs). To this end, we extend transformation methods based on integer TRSs to handle arbitrary data types, global variables, function calls and arrays, as well as encode safety checks. Then we adapt existing rewriting induction methods to LCTRSs and ...

How to Prove Ground Con uence

We show how to prove ground connuence of term rewrite relations that are induced by reductive systems of clausal rewrite rules. According to a well-known critical pair criterion it suuces for such systems to prove ground joinability of a suitable set of`critical clauses'. We outline how the latter can be done in a systematic fashion, using mathematical induction as a key concept of reasoning.

On the Equivalence of Persistent Term Rewriting Systems and Recursive Program Schemes

We introduce Persistent Term Rewriting Systems (PTRSs) by restricting redex-creation during reductions in Orthogonal Term Rewriting Systems (OTRSs 6, 10]). In particular, Recursive (Applicative) Program Schemes (RPSs 4]), considered as TRSs, are persistent. Two PTRSs R and R 0 are syntactically equivalent when any term t has an R-normal form ii it has an R 0-normal form and they coincide. We pr...
